Allergies

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to normally harmless substances such as pollen, dust mite, pet dander, foods and medications. When exposed, symptoms like sneezing, itching, congestion, swelling, or in some cases, more severe reactions, are triggered. Our allergists diagnose allergic conditions through a detailed history, physical exam, and testing such as skin or blood tests, then create personalized treatment plans that may include avoidance strategies, medications, or for some conditions, allergy immunotherapy to reduce sensitivity over time.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways in your lung. In people with asthma, the airways are persistently inflamed and sensitive. When exposed to triggers—such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold, cold air, smoke, exercise, or respiratory infections—the airways can swell further and the surrounding muscles tighten. This narrowing makes it more difficult to breathe. Allergists are the specialists trained to identify the factors contributing to breathing issues and develop management plans to improve breathing and overall health.

Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy, inflamed skin and often flares in response to irritants or allergens. In children, it is often the first indication that other allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis or asthma may develop. Our allergists help patients manage eczema by identifying triggers, guiding skin care routines, and providing treatments to reduce inflammation and prevent flare-ups, improving comfort and long-term control.

Hives/Urticaria

Hives, also called urticaria, are a common reason patients seek the care of an allergist/immunologist.  Hives can be itchy, uncomfortable, and unpredictable, appearing suddenly and affecting daily life. Our board-certified specialists are experts in evaluating the factors that contribute to this frustrating condition and providing effective, long-term treatment options for patients.

Food Allergies

A food allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food as harmful and triggers an allergic reaction. Unlike food intolerances, food allergies involve the immune system and can cause serious reactions—even from small amounts of the food. Our board- certified food allergy experts utilize allergy skin tests, blood tests, and when appropriate, oral challenges to accurately diagnose food allergies. Management plans, including emergency anaphylaxis plans, along with epinephrine devices in the event of an accidental exposure- ensure you can live safely and confidently with food allergies.

sinus

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a common condition caused by inflammation of the sinus passages, often leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pressure, headaches, postnasal drip, and fatigue. Many cases of recurrent or chronic sinusitis are driven by underlying allergies, asthma, or immune-related conditions, which is why seeing an allergist can be an important step in long-term relief.

Recurrent Infections/Immune Disorders

If you or your child experience frequent, severe, or hard-to-treat infections, there may be an underlying issue with the immune system. Immunodeficiency disorders affect the body’s ability to fight infections effectively and often require evaluation by a specialist. At AllergySA, our board-certified allergist/immunologists are specially trained to diagnose and manage immune system disorders and help patients stay healthy.
